The Anesthesiologist will report directly to the Chief, Anesthesiology Service. Dutiesinclude:
* Comprehensive medical management of patients to be rendered unconscious or insensitive to pain and stress during surgical, dental, and certain medical procedures including perioperative, intraoperative, and postoperative examination, consultation, management, monitoring, evaluation, and treatment.
* Management of fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic parameters.
* Resuscitation of patients of all ages.
* Management of malignant hyperthermia.
* Manipulation of body temperature.
* Diagnostic and therapeutic management of acute and limited chronic pain.
* Manipulation of cardiovascular parameters.
* Management of hypovolemia from any cause.
* Provide monitored anesthesia care.
* Deliver sedation and analgesia.
* Management of unconscious patients.
* Knowledge and expertise in the following anesthesia requirements: assessing, consulting, and preparing patients for anesthesia; rendering patients insensible to pain during surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures; monitoring and restoring homeostasis in perioperative and critically ill patients; diagnosing and treating painful syndromes, managing cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.
* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of professional staff and management officials.
* Responsible for implementation and management of in-hospital therapeutic modalities and timely discharge planning and disposition.
* Service as the primary service for the perioperative care of selected surgical patients including, but not limited to Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Urology, and Neurosurgery.
* Comprehensive perioperative care of the surgical patient.
* Expertise in the following anesthesia core requirements: assessing, consulting, and preparing patients for anesthesia; rending patients insensible to pain during surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures; monitoring and restoring homeostasis in perioperative and critically ill patients, diagnosing and treating painful syndromes; managing cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.
* Supervise CRNA staff, physician residents, mid-level practitioners, and medical students in the comprehensive medical management of all patient care.
* Accurately document care in the medical record.
* Provide guidance for the APNs on the Perioperative surgical service whose function it is to respond to facility wide Rapid Response Team (RRT) calls.
* Administration of general anesthesia (inhalation and intravenous) including invasive monitoring.
* Administration of regional anesthesia including: spinal, epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks.
* Placement of venous catheters.
* Placement of central venous catheters.
* Placement of chest tubes.
* Placement of arterial catheters and interpretation of pressures/wave forms.
* Placement of pulmonary artery catheters and interpretation of pressures/wave forms.
* Diagnostic Echocardiography, including placement of ECHO probe.
* Airway management including cricothyroidotomy.
* Bronchoscopy and other routine ICU procedures.
* Management of ventilator dependent patients and one lung ventilation.
* Teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and ACNP students as required.
* Taking part in departmental Journal Club and MM&I activities.
* Evaluation and supervision of mid level practitioners.
* Assisting with creation of policies and standard operating procedures for safe operations of the operating room.
* Assisting with creation of policies and standard operating procedures for safe operations of the Perioperative Surgical Home.
* Meet relevant service level and medical center performance measures.
* Serving on Healthcare System, VISN, and/or National VA committees or task forces as required
* Representing Anesthesiology on decision-making committees within the Healthcare System.
* Participating in leadership roles on local, state and/or national professional organizations specific to Anesthesiology, Pain Management, and Critical Care.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when no qualified citizens are available in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health or designee).
Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted, schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted, schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
First-Year Residency (Internship): Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training.
Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed,
(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
