Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants
Nurse Practitioner coordinates the care of adult cardiovascular patient as related to evaluation, education, treatment/diagnostic testing and follow-up using an organized multidisciplinary team approach to provide continuity of care throughout the continuum. The Electrophysiology Nurse Practitioner also participates in clinical effectiveness/research studies, support clinical staff education/professional development and community outreach activities. Population served includes adult and geriatric patients.
The Electrophysiology Nurse Practitioner provides care including history and physical examinations, diagnostic tests, medical treatment and medical intervention to adult cardiac patients with arrhythmias or those with arrhythmia risk factors ranging from 18 years old and up. Disease states covered, but are not limited to coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension, valvular heart disease, chest pain/myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease as well as post-testing/intervention management with ablations and device implants. Electrophysiology Nurse Practitioner functions independently seeking collaborative advice when necessary in the inpatient hospital and cardiac electrophysiology clinic settings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist EP Cardiologist(s) with the management of patient care, cardiac device evaluation in the hospital and clinic setting.
Conduct comprehensive and/or focused medical and social history of individuals with arrhythmias, cardiovascular disease or those with risk factors, including healthy individuals and those with acute and chronic disease.
Order and interpret laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests for the purpose of diagnosis and/or screening.
Manage ongoing medications and those immediately prior to procedure/hospitalization to prevent unnecessary cancellation of procedures in accordance to state prescriptive guidelines.
Make independent decisions regarding management and treatment of medical problems identified.
Evaluate patients day of procedure to facilitate patient care to allow for more efficient testing schedule.
Coordinates/performs cardioversions and assists cardiologists with TEE.
Formulate a plan of care with patient and/or family.
Prescribe medication in accordance with state prescriptive guidelines.
Provide appropriate patient discharge planning and/or education.
Provide information, instruction and counseling on health maintenance, health promotion, social problems, illness prevention, illness management and medication use.
Obtain informed consent from clients for diagnostic testing, TEE and cardioversions prior to procedures and ablation procedures.
Track outcome of testing.
Assist and support quality initiatives, data collection and research.
Seek collaboration or referral to collaborating physician and other health care providers or agencies as needed.
Assess cultural, social and economic factors for each client and tailor care to those factors.
Manage care of clients in a way that balances quality and cost.
Represent the practice, hospital and nurse practitioner profession in the community.
Participate in professional meetings, committees, seminars, and other continuing education to keep abreast in professional practice, to enhance professional growth, to meet professional standards and maintain current certification.
